Yugo Kohrogi 2012-2016

Apr 3 - 23, 2017
11:00-19:00 Closed | Tue, Wed
Venue | Yoshimi Arts

Yoshimi Arts is pleased to present the exhibition "Yugo Kohrogi 2012-2016".
Yugo KOHROGI has, until now, moved his home and studio around Kumamoto, Tokyo, Osaka, London, and Berlin. The location physically influenced his studio practice, how he saw and thought about his own identity as a Japanese person relative to his environment, and additionally, what he perceived from the light, food, sounds, air, mountains, temperature, city, water, and people. These have all been reflected in his work in abstract ways. Continuing to observe Kohrogi's works should clarify what lies at the core of this abstraction.
Yoshimi Arts has held solo exhibitions of Yugo Kohrogi's work, "/" in 2014 and "Pond" in 2016, and has also collected his works apart from these solo exhibitions. For this exhibition, we will present from our collection, a tableau of his works between 2012 and 2016. Instead of seeing new works presented intermittently in the form of solo shows, this will be a unique opportunity to see and enjoy the transition of his work over the course of 5 years.

Bringing past works together for an exhibition enables seeing the work from a chronologically continuous point of view, which then highlights a different side of the works than what was seen before.
Take the motif, for example.
In my work from any time period, the human figure is apparent, but the more recent the work, the more it transforms into rather a "representation of light or color" through the human form.
Furthermore, take the composition, for example.
In the early work, the human figure and the outside had a "figure/ground" relationship, but the recent works have transformed to have a more layered composition of foreground, middle plane, and deep plane.
I believe continuing to create work is essentially building up the slight differences that arise between what changes and does not change.
What kind of artistry appears within the five years, and how will it continue for the next five, ten years?
I am excited to see for myself.
